A Place Full of Likeness' and Differences
Authors Note: This is a comparative essay on how April Morning and Dead or Alive both have one of the same themes.
We can lose many things other than our live to war or fighting. Every one of the soldiers who fought in any war lost their innocence as soon as they pulled the trigger. A perfect example of this would be the two characters Jack Ryan Jr. from Dead or Alive and Adam from April Morning. The books Dead or Alive and April Morning are both based on the theme of Loss of Innocence though the show it in different ways.
One reason why both books are similar in theme is both the plots revolve around the loss of innocence. While one is taking place in the times of the Revolutionary War and one in modern day they both lose their innocence because they are a part of the war. Jack loses his innocence when he goes out into the field to hunt down the Emir. While Adam loses his innocence when he signs the muster book and goes to war for freedom against the British.
Another reason why these two characters are similar is they both lose their innocence in the same way. One way you can tell that this is when Adam loses his innocence is on page 70 when his father asks him without looking up from his chair “name?” and he replies back, “Adam Cooper.” Now the second Adam says that it his when he loses his innocence. Also Jack Ryan Jr. loses his innocence when he actually goes into the field to try and catch or kill the Emir who is like the Osama Bin Laden in the book.
While both these characters are similar in many qualities but they have some distinct differences as well. Jack Ryan Jr. is smart, intuitive and good with information and deciphering it. Adam is strong, smart, and stubborn. Jack Ryan is an analyst who works for a secret organization that is unknown to the government, which is why he is good at deciphering information. Adam is good at helping around the house because he can do hard labor.
While both these characters are very similar with the theme of loss of innocence and both characters losing their innocence in the same manner. But both characters are different because they have different characteristics.

A Time Period Full of Conflict
Authors Note: This piece is about the main conflict in the book April Morning.
Growing up in the 1700’s was hard at any age, especially late teens. Why, because you have to learn to grow up, become a real man or woman and learn to survive without parental guidance. But when you have a war that may or may not arise, even more conflicts can emerge. In the story, April Morning you can come to understand that a battle of in the Revolutionary War isn’t the main conflict in the book.
The conflict between Moses (Dad) and Adam (son) was one that was the real main conflict other than the war. The reason these two always but heads about most topic is because of a lack of communication. This is why they usually have these arguments and why it is one of the main conflicts in the story. Also they have different opinions about things as well. Adam thinks that he should be given more privileges and more respect while Moses thinks that he should still be treated like a child.
While the conflict between him and his father is important in the overall story, what kinds of conflicts happen are needed to be spoken of too. There are two types of conflict in this story, Person vs. Person, which is throughout the book and Person vs. Society which in turn is Adam and the British. A reason I can understand why it is P vs. P is because it is Adam versus his father because they argue about many things and don’t agree on hardly any of them. A World of One Sidedness
Authors Note: This piece is about the point of view of Adam from the book “April Morning.”
Back during the times of the Revolutionary War, being a 16 year old was tough, working around the house, pondering about the war and trying to finish school. This is the setting of the book, April Morning. Adam is 16 when the infamous Paul Revere coming riding through the town in the dead of night warning everyone of the oncoming British Army. The book April Morning in written in the perspective of Adam.
The way the book is written Adam makes you think that everyone thinks he is immature and not old enough to have opinions. One reason why everyone thinks he is not a man is because of the way he acts. He reads the bible and studies from it like most back then but he asks questions about it which was considered immoral because the mindset about the bible is that “whatever it says goes at that was final.” Also everyone thinks Adam doesn’t really have an opinion on the war because he acts younger than he is in the eyes of his parents and peers, when really he has attitudes about war and life in general.
While the point of view of Adam is important, looking through the perspective of others is standard too. Another perspective this story can be looked at is the point of view of Adam’s father. In his perspective he is just disciplining and helping him become a man. What he doesn’t realize is that he can be a little hard on him and hurt him too much. Moses Cooper (Adam’s Dad) is an argumentative person who is bullheaded and tough. So he doesn’t realize that he can be too hard on his oldest son.
While the perspective of the story and the point of view is important, looking at the other side of the equation or side is key to learning about conflicts and anything in general.

Prediction About The Outsiders
Prediction about the Outsiders
Authors Note: This is my prediction about the Outsiders in the form of an epilogue.
6 years later. Ponyboy is now 22 and in his last year of college before he gets his bachelor’s in English. He plans on becoming a lawyer and help support Soda because he is on welfare. Thing are going good for Darry he finally got enough money to earn a bachelors in Sports Medicine and became a sports doctor for The Oklahoma Sooners. Soda was always there to support Darry and Ponyboy through all the tough times through college. Soda stayed in the field of auto mechanics and is living a happy life close to the college that Ponyboy is in.
Why I think this is because Ponyboy is very good in the subject of English and Darry is good at sports and is kind and smart. I believe that Darry has been setting aside money for years so he could get himself through college because that is the kind of attitude that Darry has. Also Soda has a job that I think helped both of them through college too. Some text evidence that shows that Darry is a loving person is in chapter 3 he is furious out of concern that Ponyboy’s carelessness will eventually get him hurt. Even though he slapped him, he slapped because he loved him and didn’t want to get hurt.

How We Change Throughout Our Experience
Authors Note: This piece is about the character development of Randy and how he is a dynamic character.
Everywhere you look there are people who are misjudged in society, whether it is at work, in school, or just by people in general. The greasers are a perfect example of those kinds of people in society. The group who looked down upon them was a group called the Socs. These were the upper class kids who are a group of over privileged teens. One of them is Randy; he is one of the “Super Socs” who thinks the greasers are all mean and nasty. Randy is a dynamic character because when he actually looks at the situation from the greasers point he realizes that they are just people with a different story to tell.
One reason why Randy is a dynamic character is because he says “And tonight… people get hurt in rumbles, maybe killed. I’m sick of it because it doesn’t do you any good. You can’t win you, know that, don’t you?” When Johnny killed Bob in the park it changed Randy’s life. Randy was Bob’s best friend and that night his life was changed forever. Randy went from being a Soc who judged the heck out the greasers to becoming a person who looks at both sides of the situation before judging someone. Another way that Randy is a dynamic character is because he helps Ponyboy realize that the Socs are susceptible to pain and have problems too.
While helping Ponyboy understand more about the Socs, learning that there is no point in fighting between the Greasers and the Socs is important also. Randy says that “Greasers will still be Greasers and Socs will still be Socs. Sometimes I think that it is the ones in the middle that are the lucky stiffs…” He means that he can’t stand the fighting and all the tension between these two groups. Because Randy is saying that no matter how hard each group tries no one will be able to climb the ladder up to being a Soc or fall down to being a Greaser.
While S.E Hinton does a fantastic job describing how Randy is a dynamic character. There are other authors who do a fine job too. One example of a dynamic character is Edmund from the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. Edmund goes from being a snotty, stuck up little brat, to being King Edmund the brave, just and loyal through a turn of events. Another example of a dynamic character would be the beast from Beauty and the Beast. The beast goes from being a savage brute who show no signs of sympathy or compassion to a person who would fight to the death for the person he loved.
When you look at things from a different perspective you can come to understand what the other person or group feels when you judge them. That is why Randy is a dynamic character.

Defying Stereotypes
Authors Note: This is response is about one of the main ideas about the book “The Outsiders.”
I think that this book is mainly about how Ponyboy and Johnny defy the typical stereotype about how all the greasers are bad people who have no future other than going to federal prison. The reason I think that these two defy the stereotype is because they risked their lives and ran into a burning church to save kids they had never even met before. “Suddenly, in the red glow and the haze, I remembered wondering what it was like in a burning ember, and I thought: Now I know it’s a red hell. Why aren’t I scared? (pg 82). This is a quote that directly relates to the theme defying stereotypes because Ponyboy and Johnny both risked their lives for innocent little kids.
That really makes you think wow, these guys must be different no normal greaser would do that. When you think about in no way Dally or Steve goes in there to save the kids because they are the “typical greaser,” their parents are dead or they have completely estranged them because they either beat them or treated them like the dirt, always stepping on them. That is why Ponyboy and Johnny defy the stereotype because they think of others before themselves while most greasers think of themselves before others. Another reason why these two are different is because when they were at the double drive-in movie Dally was being exceedingly nasty to some girls named Cherry and Marcia who were Socs.
But when Dally gets driven away by them Cherry turns around and asks them if they were going to act the way he did and they respond by saying, never. That really shows the real character these two have. Then later it turns out that she helps them by being their informer/spy in a sense by just keeping them up to speed on the latest plots or schemes by the Socs.

Traveling to Different Resources
Authors Note: This essay is on why we should be able to go to different rooms during resource.
Going to different classrooms during study hall for help is a useful resource.
At ACMS we used to be able to but they cancelled that and said we had to either ask during class or after school. “There are many reasons why ACMS should bring back being able to go different rooms during resource for help.”
One reason why the administrators should bring back going to different classes is that some kids might not be able to stay after school or come in before school. So not as many kids would have to stay after school and have a hassle trying to get home since we can’t go on the late bus. Also it is difficult if you have a question on a homework assignment and your teacher doesn’t teach that specific subject. So we would see if they want to work with you to figure the question out. Most of the time, they don’t know the answer or were not supposed to work with someone on the assignment.
While not being able to stay after school is important the fact that it will help kids study and improve on homework completion is something to be look upon. If the school was to allow the return of going to different rooms during resource for help it would help students complete homework on time and thus increasing their chance at earning a better grade.

The Consequences of Being Egotistical
Author’s Note: This is an essay on why Casey's (from “Casey at the Bat”) ego leads to his downfall.
2 outs, bottom of the ninth, down by 3, and bases are loaded. The classic baseball situation, how you act in that scene can sometime determine how liked and your stature as a ballplayer. The poem “Casey at the Bat” by Ernest Thayer shows that cockiness will lead to someone’s downfall.
When someone is cocky, they tend to think they can do everything and they need to constantly satisfy their ego. Casey is a perfect example of this kind of person. Being the best ballplayer around this was an ample time to fill his ego. And with the crowd behind him he felt he could just blow it and then make it super heroic by purposefully missing and not swinging at the first two pitches.
While Casey’s strikeout for being cocky is important in his downfall, the crowd also played a big factor in the role of his downfall. The crowd was the outlet and all Casey had to do was plug himself in and he had enough energy to be carried away. Maybe if the crowd hadn’t been so intense about the umpire he wouldn’t have been so ego-happy during the final at bat.
Cockiness is a main reason that someone with a high amount of respect can lead to your downfall. So just be humble, and things will always work out for the greater good.

A Quote That Changes Lives
Everywhere across the vastness of the Earth, people in every nation are wondering why their lives turned out unsuccessful. Part of the reason being they didn’t think for success. “Our life is what our thoughts make it” by Marcus Aurelius, the great Roman Emperor, teaches us that what we think shapes the way we live our lives.”
Marcus Aurelius was a Roman Emperor from 161-180, ruling alongside Lucius Verus until his tragic death in 169. Aurelius was one of the great stoic philosophers and the last of 5 good emperors. Aurelius’ work in meditation between 170 and 180 and in that time it was believed that he said “Our life is what our thoughts make it.”
When Aurelius said this saying is important why he said plays a big role in his and all of life. This quote can relate to me because of an experience that was life changing. In the summer I earned a scholarship to go to WASC Leadership Camp (Wisconsin Associations of School Councils). Our group’s motto was “Your life is what your thoughts make it.” Our leader said this quote inspired him in countless ways. Coming home from the camp I had to go play a baseball game we were facing our rivals the “Blazers.” They were one of the best in our league. I told my team to think positive and that we were going to win the game. The outcome was Firebirds 7, Blazers 5. We won the game to advance into the tournament. The reason was because I kept encouraging my team members.
The way we shape our lives is important. The quote by Marcus Aurelius can help shape correctly. Millions of people are wondering why there life is so horrible, one of those reasons is the fact that they thought they couldn’t succeed.
